A LARGE JAPANESE KAMAKURABORI RED LACQUER CHARGER, Showa Period, 20th Century
$180 AUD
The circular dish of traditional form, expertly carved in relief with a rhythmic, swirling ground showcasing the characteristic chisel marks of the Kamakura style. The piece is finished in multiple layers of cinnabar lacquer over a black base, a technique rooted in the 13th-century chōshitsu tradition. The reverse is similarly finished and bears a formal four-character workshop seal mark in red to the center.
30 cm (11 ¾ in.) diam.
Provenance & Studio Note
The piece is a refined example of mid-20th-century studio production. The four-character seal identifies it as a product of a dedicated Kamakurabori workshop (likely incorporating the geographic Kamakura 鎌倉 designation within the mark). This style of lacquerware, traditionally carved from Katsura wood, remains a hallmark of Japanese folk craft (Mingei) appreciation during the Showa era.
Condition Report
Overall: In good decorative condition commensurate with age and careful handling.
Surface: The lacquer retains a rich luster with no evidence of significant crazing or lifting.
